HIKE FOR HEALTH

Hiking for Physical Health

What do you think of when you think of physical fitness?  What you observe in the mirror?  As our muscles become stronger and leaner from hiking, this is most often how we judge its effects on us.

However, hiking also provides other benefits to our physical being that we cannot see in the mirror.  In addition to positive changes in weight and blood pressure which we can measure, hiking can help us live longer due to reduced incidences of chronic health issues.  Thus when we strengthen our bodies through hiking, our bodies have a better chance of staying healthy.

Hiking for Mental Health

We momentarily disrupt the stresses and strains on our psyche when we hike.  The mental mini-vacation lets us re-charge.  For instance, following a hike how do you feel? Has a relaxed state of mind overtaken you?  Do you actually feel really, really good, even if you are fatigued or sore?  The sense of accomplishment and inner peace we get when hiking is powerful.

When we hike our minds wander, and we simply live in the moment.  Immersed in the experience, we free our minds, clear our heads, and unleash our creativity.  We work through emotions, prioritize and organize, and even set intentions we did not know we had.  Following a hike, our brains feel less foggy, and our psyche is refreshed. Hiking is thus great for our mental health because it both energizes and relaxes our minds.

OTHER REASONS WE HIKE

We also hike for adventure, to see nature’s beauty, and to connect with the land.  With so many great reasons to go, do yourself a favor and hit the trails.  Happy Hiking!
